A New Taste of Italy is Coming to Eddy Street Commons

By Tim Vicsik  ·  February 26, 2026

If you've strolled past the old Urban Outfitters space at Eddy Street Commons lately and noticed some suspicious "Opening Soon" signage, no — you're not imagining things. Osteria Amici is officially heading to South Bend, and as someone who lives and works in this neighborhood, I'm pretty excited about it.

The windows are papered up, the fencing is out, and construction is underway where racks of flannel shirts and vintage-washed tees once lived. Honestly? A tradeoff I'll take every single time.

What Is Osteria Amici?

Osteria Amici isn't a chain moving in to fill a vacancy — this is a locally grown, genuinely acclaimed Italian restaurant that already has South Bend-area food lovers making the drive up to Elkhart. The original location opened in 2025 at 240 E. Jackson Blvd. in Elkhart's River District (WNDU), and it came out of the gate swinging.

The restaurant is a collaboration between two heavy hitters in the regional dining scene:

Co-Founder

Kurt Janowsky

Founder of Navarre Hospitality Group, operating acclaimed restaurants across the South Bend–Elkhart corridor for over 30 years — including Doc Pierce's and Rocky River Tap and Table.

Co-Founder

Paul Cataldo

World champion pizza maker and co-owner of Antonio's Ristorante in South Bend. Janowsky reportedly spent more than a decade convincing Cataldo to open a second restaurant (The Hungry Newsletter).

Together they've built something that blends old-world Italian craftsmanship with modern elegance — upscale but approachable. The kind of place where you can dress up for date night or slide in after a Notre Dame game in your stadium gear and feel equally welcome.

What Can South Bend Diners Expect?

Based on what's made Elkhart regulars rave, here's a quick preview of what's likely coming to Eddy Street:

🍕 Artisan, Championship-Level Pizza

Paul Cataldo's approach to pizza is obsessive in the best way. His Neapolitan-inspired crusts use a long cold fermentation process — reportedly around 72 hours — to develop flavor and achieve that blistered, airy edge that separates a great pizza from a forgettable one. This isn't delivery-style. This is pizza as a culinary art form.

🍝 House-Made Pasta and Northern Italian Fare

Pizza gets the headlines, but the menu goes well beyond. Reviewers at the Elkhart location have highlighted dishes like truffle fettuccine and house-made pasta as standouts (OpenTable). Expect fresh, modern Northern Italian cuisine — refined without being fussy.

🌿 A Vibe That Fits Eddy Street

The Elkhart location is described as having warm woods, an open layout, and an inviting patio — the kind of atmosphere that feels both special and relaxed. That translates perfectly to the Eddy Street Commons crowd, whether you're celebrating a win over USC or just grabbing dinner before a show.

Why This Matters for the Eddy Street Area

Eddy Street Commons has always been one of those neighborhoods where the right tenant makes all the difference. The development near Notre Dame has grown into a genuine live-work-dine district, and a restaurant of Osteria Amici's caliber takes it up another notch.

"Walkable, high-quality dining options aren't just nice amenities — they're part of what makes this area such a desirable place to live."

As someone who helps people find condos and homes near Notre Dame, I always pay close attention to what's going in and around Eddy Street. A world-class Italian restaurant steps from your front door? That's not a small thing.

When Does Osteria Amici Open in South Bend?

No official opening date has been announced yet as of late February 2026. The "Opening Soon" signage is up, construction is active, and the buzz is real — but you'll want to follow along for updates. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one and will post an update the moment we have a date.

In the meantime, if you're curious what you're in for, the Elkhart location at 240 E. Jackson Blvd. is absolutely worth the 30-minute drive north. Consider it a preview.
